IELTS Writing Task 1: write an overview and select data
By VNDocs · Updated
A clear Task 1 response gives the reader the overall picture before individual figures. This guide focuses on numerical charts in IELTS Academic; maps and processes require different choices of key features.
Identify what the chart measures
Before writing, note the subject, unit, location and dates. Distinguish people from percentages, and actual results from projections. If there is no time dimension, do not invent a trend across years.
IELTS Academic Task 1 requires at least 150 words. The recommended allocation is about 20 minutes out of the 60-minute Writing test. A few minutes spent reading and grouping the information are more useful than immediately copying every value.
Use the overview for the main features
Ask what the reader needs to know if you can keep only two important features. A time-series chart might call for the general direction and a change in ranking. A static comparison might call for the largest and smallest groups or a striking difference.
No opening phrase is compulsory. Accuracy matters more than a memorised sentence: do not say all groups increased when one declined. The overview need not list every value; selected figures belong in the supporting detail.
An original worked example
Suppose bus and bicycle travel accounted for 20% and 10% respectively in 2010, and 25% and 30% in 2020. These are invented practice figures, not a real survey or an official examination question.
The example identifies the two main changes. A detail paragraph could compare the five-percentage-point rise for buses with the twenty-percentage-point rise for cycling. An increase from 10% to 30% is twenty percentage points; that is different from a twenty-percent increase.
Overall, both modes of transport became more common, but cycling rose more sharply and overtook bus travel by 2020.Group details around comparisons
You might group lines that rise together, compare similar categories, or divide the period around an important change. Choose a structure that suits the chart rather than forcing every task into the same template.
Give each paragraph a comparison and relevant supporting figures. Do not speculate about economic or social causes unless the input supplies them. For maps, consider location and changes in land use; for processes, describe stages, sequence and the start or end of the process.
Check your response before requesting feedback
Open IELTS Writing practice, select Task 1 and inspect the chart before writing. After receiving AI feedback, check every suggestion against the original image: labels or values can be misread. Rewrite one paragraph and compare it with your first version.
- Check units, dates and verb tense.
- State the main features instead of merely repeating the question.
- Support comparisons with data and avoid invented causes.
- Write at least 150 words and leave time to check spelling.
