TOEIC Speaking question 11: give a clear, supported opinion

By VNDocs · Updated

An opinion response should make your position and reasoning clear. Use preparation time to choose an explanation you can develop, rather than listing many reasons that you cannot finish.

Identify the precise choice or claim

Read the entire question for its audience and limits. If it asks about a workplace choice, do not drift into a general speech about every benefit of technology or education.

The linked ETS sample gives question 11 a 45-second preparation period and a 60-second response. In the app, check the displayed timer and task instructions; a practice session is not an official ETS test.

Plan a short chain of reasoning

Note a position, one or two reasons and a concrete example. One explained reason is more useful than two undeveloped keywords. Do not invent studies or survey figures to make your position appear authoritative.

Original practice situation: choose flexible working hours. The following illustrates an opening, not a complete sixty-second response or an officially scored answer.

I prefer a flexible work schedule because it helps me concentrate on demanding tasks. For instance, I can do detailed analysis early in the morning, when I am most alert, and arrange routine meetings later.

Use clear sentences at a controlled pace

State the position early, connect the reason to an example and conclude briefly if time remains. Do not force every answer into a fixed sentence count or memorised structure.

If you misspeak, make a brief correction and continue. Restarting after every minor error can break the argument and waste time. Ensure the audio is clear instead of judging the response only by the transcript word count.

Review the actual weakness

Ask whether the first sentence answers the question, the example explains the reason and any hesitation obscures meaning. Check recognition accuracy before using AI feedback. An official TOEIC score reflects the full test, not a single practice response.

  • Address the specific choice or claim.
  • State a position and explain the reason.
  • Use a relevant example without invented research.
  • Listen, select one improvement and record again.
