TOEIC Writing email questions 6–7: fulfil every instruction
By VNDocs · Updated
A long email still misses the task if a requested action is absent. For questions 6–7, turn the directions into a short action list before choosing a greeting or closing.
Identify the audience, purpose and actions
Read the incoming email for the relationship and reason for replying. Then inspect the directions: you may need to provide information, ask questions, explain a problem or make a suggestion.
List each required action separately. If the task requests two questions and one piece of information, mark all three in your draft. Do not assume the requirements from a memorised template; the next task may ask for something different.
Make the response actionable
Put the main information early and specify times, places or options when relevant. A question should be clear enough for the recipient to answer. A general apology cannot replace a practical response to a problem.
Original practice scenario: reply to a workshop organiser by confirming attendance and asking about the room and preparation materials. The email below illustrates those actions; it is not an ETS-scored model answer.
Dear Ms Lee,
Thank you for inviting me to the workshop. I can attend on Friday afternoon. Could you confirm which room we will use? Also, should I bring a laptop or any printed materials?
Best regards,
AlexUse an appropriate register
Match the greeting and closing to the recipient. Prefer clear, accurate and polite sentences to several lines of stock introductions. If declining, give a concise reason and an alternative when the task supports one.
Check tense, singular and plural forms, time prepositions and indirect questions. Avoid extra promises or invented details that contradict the original message.
Match each instruction to a sentence
Return to your action list and identify the sentence that fulfils each item. If you cannot find one, supply the missing information before polishing small errors. Use the separate Email 1 and Email 2 modes on VNDocs to practise both questions.
- Address the correct person and purpose.
- Complete every action in the directions.
- Use specific questions and a consistent register.
- Do not convert raw ratings linearly to ETS 0–200 scores.
